Chakradharpur Division is playing valuable role in the South Eastern Railway. It is the heart of Chotanagpur Plateau because it is placed in this region. In the state of Jharkhand it is spread over the districts of Simdega, East and West Singhbhum Saraikela-Kharsawan and in Orissa spread over Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts. Chakradharpur Division has the main line of Passenger traffic and freight corridor in between the Western and Eastern part of India and therefore it is a heart of South Eastern Railway. On 22nd January 1890 this division had opened the first railway line between Chakradharpur Purulia. The length of this line was 72.25 miles.
